And it's a feeling I've gotten used to over the last decade or so. I'm a Baltimore Ravens fan, and I'm beginning to think that I'm a glutton for punishment.

As numbers on the game clock in yesterday's AFC Championship Game shrunk, it looked like—for the first time since I was in the fifth grade—the Ravens would be going to the SuperBowl. Joe Flacco led a drive that, as CBS color analyst Phil Simms said before it began, was reminiscent of Baltimore's huge win at Pittsburgh in November.

Joe Flacco outplayed Tom Brady, and he threw the winning touchdown pass to send the Ravens to Indianapolis for the big game. But Lee Evans didn't hang onto it. What happened next seemed as inevitable as the sunrise: Billy Cundiff missed a 32-yard chip shot, and it was over.

The Ravens did everything the experts said they needed to to win that game. Joe Flacco was better than he was against the Texans. The Ravens made the stops on defense when they needed them, and even mixed in a few turnovers, including one huge interception to nullify an errant Flacco throw shortly before.

It's been a long 11 years in Baltimore. After that SuperBowl victory against the Giants in late January 2001, there has been hardship. The Ravens made the playoffs each of the next two seasons, but never got further than the divisional round. Then, the Kyle Boller experiment began in full force, with two dreadful seasons to show for it. Then, with possibly their best team since 2000 and before the one that took the field yesterday, the Ravens in 2006 were stunned at home by the Indianapolis Colts. They didn't even give up a touchdown.

The next year saw the return of Boller, and a 5-11 finish in which they seemed to play just below the level of their opponents. They lost an overtime thriller to the 1-15 Miami Dolphins, and a few weeks before pushed the then-undefeated Patriots to the limit on Monday Night Football. I was there for that one. I could feel the sting of Boller's hail mary being caught at the four yard line all the way in the upper deck.

In the four years since, the Ravens have won a playoff game in each season, advancing to two AFC title games. The 2008 title game wasn't a surprise. A rookie quarterback couldn't beat a tough Steelers defense that went on to beat Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals in the SuperBowl.

In 2009, they crushed a weakened Patriots squad on their way to being beaten by the Colts again. And last year, they let a comfortable lead in the divisional round disappear into the cold Pittsburgh night.

It never gets any easier.

Between now and September, I'll occupy myself with my other team of choice: The Boston Red Sox. The same Red Sox who let a nine game wild card lead fall out of their hands in much the same way that Lee Evans let the AFC trophy be punched out of his hands by Sterling Moore. At least the Red Sox gave me a month to prepare for that one.

The Red Sox have brought home two championships this century after an 86 year wait. I wasn't around for most of it, but I was around for some, and more recently they've reverted back to their heart-shattering ways.

In 2008, they were one run away from returning to the World Series. Everyone knows, or at least I know, that the third strike that the Rays' David Price threw to J.D. Drew in the 2008 ALCS was a ball. Jonathan Papelbon failed to record the final out of the third game of the Division Series in 2009, and again on the last day of the season in 2011, his last as a member of the Red Sox.

Most Patriots fans share the same love for the Red Sox that I have, but they can't understand what it's like to have two knockout punches of this magnitude in the span of just a few months.

The Red Sox struggled for a long time, but, since former Ravens QB Trent Dilfer returned home from Disney World in 2001, Boston has been on top of the world. The Patriots won the SuperBowl that next season, then again in 2003 and 2004. The Red Sox won in 2004 and 2007, the Celtics in 07-08 and the Bruins got involved this past summer.

The same can't be said for Baltimore. The Orioles haven't had a winning season since Austin 3:16 was a household name. The Baltimore Bullets moved to Washington ages ago. We've never had a hockey team.

Patriots fans did have to suffer through the imperfect end to what had been a perfect season in 2007, but there was still a Red Sox parade to soften the blow.

Now, with baseball season looming on the horizon, all I can do is worry that this vicious cycle will continue. The Red Sox have done little to improve upon the roster that disbanded two months before they were supposed to, and the question now is: how long will they wait to deliver another blow? Will they miss the playoffs for the third straight year? Will they lose in the first round of the playoffs? Or, will they make it to the point of no return, and have nothing to show for it?

I want the Giants to win the SuperBowl for a few reasons. Obviously, I can't root for the team that showed my heart to me before slamming it to the ground yesterday. Still, wouldn't it be nice to see Eli Manning come into Peyton's house and win the second ring that has eluded the elder brother to this point? Maybe it's just me.

The biggest reason, and it's a selfish one, is that I want the Patriots fans that I have to see on a daily basis to be as miserable as I will be until the shock finally wears off. After all, misery does love company.

The class of 2013 will be having a viewing party for the big game on February 5 in the Campus Center. I likely will not be in attendance, but rather watching the game alone in a dark room, away from any contact with the numerous Patriots fans that I call friends.

26 days until pitchers and catchers report to Fort Myers.

A new Thanksgiving tradition

Thanksgiving generally looks the same for me every year. The day typically consists of watching the home chef prepare the meal, and watching football in order to build up enough of an appetite to eat as much as possible.

This year was no different. I did my part to help set up by carrying chairs from the basement to the dinner table, and the meal was just as good this year as its ever been.

I also watched plenty of football. The NFL outdid themselves this year with three solid games on paper, and that's including the Detroit Lions. The Lions game was the worst of the three, but still entertaining nonetheless. Fortunately, the Cowboys and Dolphins stepped it up with a 20-19 thriller in Dallas.

More recently, the NFL has added a third game on its own network to round out the evening. It serves as a great wake-up call from he mandatory post-dinner nap.

This year was a bit different. Instead of waking up to watch the game on TV, I got suited up to go watch the San Francisco 49'ers take on the Baltimore Ravens, live at M & T Bank Stadium. The atmosphere was unlike any other football game I've been to, as the two teams that played are among the best in their respective conferences, and featured two brothers at the helm on either sideline.

The game was a close one, and the Ravens ultimately came out on top thanks to their best defensive performance of the season.

I think I've found a change in my Thanksgiving routine that I could really get used to. Unfortunately, the Thanksgiving night game moves around from year-to-year, but you better believe I'll capitalize on the opportunity to go if it comes my way again.

I've been to nationally televised games, and playoff games, and big divisional games, but none have been as electric as this one was. It's hard for me to find something more important than a turkey-induced nap, but I think I have.

Speaking of new traditions, my fellow Ravens fans have adopted a new one at the stadium that I've never encountered before. When the Ravens find themselves in key defensive situations, the fans, prompted or otherwise, join in harmonizing the White Stripes' 'Seven Nation Army.' There's not a whole lot more impressive than seeing 70,000+ people singing in tune, and it seemed to have an impact on the Niners' offense late in the game.

Here, see for yourself:

(Note: the video isn't from the Thanksgiving game, but you get the idea).

5 things to do before Thanksgiving break

To do lists make everything easier. It's even better when your list is limited to fun, or even practical tasks.

Here's my short list of things you should try to do before you head home for Thanksgiving, and return to wintry Boston for the rest of "fall" semester.

1. Check out the foliage

New England is renowned for it's glorious fall foliage. If you have the means, you should definitely hop in the car and go for a scenic drive. Even if you don't go too far outside the Boston area, you'll still be in for a nice view.

The leaves are finally starting to change colors, after a brief interruption by snow, but they'll probably be close to gone by the time Thanksgiving break is over. Head down Rt. 2 off 128/95, or Rt. 24 off the expressway for some nice scenery close by.

2. Attend a major event
The NBA lockout has put a bit of a limit on entertainment options this fall, but there's still plenty to see and do. The Bruins are finally starting to get over their Stanley Cup hangover, so now might be a good time to get into the TD Garden for cheap. And if you're a sophomore, the Office of Student Activities still has some discounted tickets ($20) available.

The next option might be limited only to a few like-minded individuals, but WWE Raw will be at the Garden next Monday (Nov. 14) for a three-hour sports entertainment bonanza. WWE Hall-of-Famer The Rock will be returning to Raw as he and Mass. native John Cena prepare to team up at the following week's pay-per-view.

I'll be laying out the newest edition of The 1851 Chronicle that night, but I'll be there in spirit. Tickets start at just $20 for the show.

3. Witness the Faneuil Hall Tree Lighting

Can't make it to 30 Rock in NYC? No problem. The Faneuil Hall Christmas tree will be lit up right in town on November 19 at 5 PM. the 19th is the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and will help you get in the holiday spirit for the following week.

4. Make your shopping list

There has to be more than a few people planning to take advantage of the great savings that come with Black Friday. If you've got the motivation to wake up early (like, before the sun early) then you'll be in a great position to pick up some solid bargains, no matter where you go.

5. Take part in college night at the Frog Pond

What better way to warm up (or, cool down) for winter than ice skating? The Frog Pond at Boston Common has a new promotion this year: college night. Students can skate for just $2 when they present a valid college ID on Tuesday nights. The first college night takes place Nov. 15, and will feature a range of music courtesy of WERS, Emerson College Radio.

What's on your list of things to do before the cold creeps in? Anything I forgot? Let me know in the comments!

Weekend Preview: 11/4-6

You think Tuesday is too early to start looking at the upcoming weekend? Maybe you're right.

But... it turns out this week has already been busier than last week's midterm adventure, so I'm looking for anything to get my mind off the 3 papers I have due tomorrow.

In case you're wondering, I haven't started any of them.

I'm also looking for a way to wind down from submitting two job applications for, you know, the real world.

Anyway, the weekend ahead is a big one for Lasell. On Friday, the original winner of Last Comic Standing, Dat Phan, will be performing on campus. He could arguably be one of the most well-known acts to come to Lasell so it's definitely a can't-miss event. Phan will be joined by opener Ray DeVito to help round out the show in Yamawaki.

On Sunday, the rugby club will host its second home game of the year, and their first playoff game ever at 1 P.M. on Grellier Field. The Lasers had a tremendous regular season, finishing the year 5-0 after topping formerly undefeated Framingham State.

The game was originally scheduled for last week, but was postponed in the wake of the Halloween snowfall.

For me, it's a bit of a shame, as I had every intention of going last week. Since it was rescheduled, I won't be able to go since I'll be in sunny Los Angeles for the weekend. (That shouldn't stop the 1851 Chronicle from live-blogging the event. Follow the paper on Twitter @1851Chronicle). End: cheap plug.

I've been planning this trip to LA for about a month or so, and I'll be attending the Education Writers Association conference at UCLA while I'm there. Of course, there will be plenty of time to explore the city (I've never been), and I'll be sure to post an update and maybe even some pictures from when I tour Nickelodeon Studios.

Midterm madness, but that's not all

I don't know about you, but midterms snuck up on me quite quickly this semester. This post is being written in between two of those exams.

The only physical exams I'll be taking are for closely related courses taught by the same professor. I feel confident about how I did on the first one, and I'm not necessarily sweating the second one either. However, it's definitely a lot of information to remember and it's hard to be sure that you're going to be able to retain everything long enough.

The fact that the tests are 100% essay based makes it just that much harder, especially on my ever-so delicate wrists that have become so accustomed to typing anything and everything.

If that were the end of the madness, I'd have little to worry about.

But wait, there's more:

As the Co-Editor-In-Chief of the 1851 Chronicle, it's always exciting to see a new issue of the paper come out. But, it doesn't happen without a fair share of challenges. There's plenty of reading, re-reading and more reading after that to be done before it can go to print, and even then, mistakes still happen.

That's why I'll be on campus for about 14 hours today, worrying about tests, work, and getting close to wrapping up the paper.

It's fun, exciting work for the most part but that doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to next week, especially now that the two research papers I have (for those same history courses I'm taking exams for today) have been pushed back a week.

What gets me through with such a heavy load? It's nothing more than a healthy balance of procrastination and hard work. There's nothing wrong with pushing studying back an hour to play a game of MVP Baseball 2005, or to browse Facebook. But I've learned that these things, while they technically do get in the way of getting things done, can actually be beneficial when crunch time comes.

How's your week been?

October Preview: Wide range of events and activities all month long

It's hard to think of any one month that is the busiest for the Office of Student Activities, except for June of course.

But, in terms of the fall semester, it's looking like October might come out on top. There is a full slate of events throughout the month that cover a wide range of interests. Basically, you're bound to find something that you'll want to do.

Of course, there are ticket sales to a variety of off-campus events at a great rate. We're currently selling tickets to the New England Revolution game on October 15 at Gillette Stadium. Wouldn't that be a great way to welcome family and friends to the area for Family, Friends and Alumni Weekend?

If you're looking for a way to get in the Halloween spirit ahead of LCR's annual Creeps and Ghouls dance, tickets for the Boston Ghost Tour on the night of October 22 are available for $10 each at the Office of Student Activities.

The most activity, though, is happening right here on campus. Next week is Lasell's annual spirit week, featuring free T-shirts for each class, the first ever nugget eating competition as well as Family Feud, Lasell style!

Spirit Week runs directly into Family, Friends and Alumni Weekend, which features plenty of trips of its own, as well as movie nights, a mentalist duo, river day canoe races and the undefeated rugby club's lone home game of the season.

Also in October: CAB Fright Fest tickets, Class of 2012 pumpkin carving, the All for Haiti talent show benefitting victims of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the more recent disaster in Japan, as well as various visiting musicians, comedians and the ghost hunter, John Zaffis.

Which event(s) are you most looking forward to?

Eating Out: Five great places for food off campus

So, now that the semester is completely underway, you've probably gotten used to, or at least re-acquainted with eating on campus most days. First year students in particular are probably starting to wonder what the best options are for off-campus dining. Even upperclassmen may not know all of the options available outside of Valentine dining hall.

Here are some of the top choices for eating out around Lasell, in no particular order:

1. Bruegger's Bagels

Bagels, coffee and breakfast sandwiches are all available for a low price right by campus. They're also the only place on this list that accepts Laser Loot, which means no cash is neccessary if you have money on your torch card. Also, if you're looking to buy in bulk, baker's dozens are half-off on Wednesdays.

2. Prime Deli

Located right next to Brandeis University in Waltham, the Prime Deli offers everything from omlettes to cheeseburgers, and you won't be disappointed regardless of which one you pick. They deliver as early as 9 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., giving you a choice of breakfast, lunch or dinner.

3. Prospect Cafe

The reccomended dish: buffalo chicken calzone. If you're from outside the Massachusetts area, it's possible you've never heard of such a concoction (I hadn't either), but once you feast on one for the first time you'll never be the same again. If the calzone seems too intimidating, their pizza comes highly reccommended by many and they deliver, making it even easier to fill up without going out.

4. Carl's Steak Subs & Burritos

Philly's got nothing on this. Carl's steak and cheese sub runs away with the honor of 'best cheesesteak', not just in Mass. but the world. Be warned: only order the large if you don't want to eat again for at least 24 hours, as it has the potential to overload your stomach. If the subs aren't for you, the burritos just might be. They're equally overloaded with fresh ingredients and come at an affordable price. The only down side is that they don't deliver, so you'll need to find a ride to their location at 55 Prospect St. in Waltham.

5. Wing Night at John Brewer's Tavern

Sunday and Monday nights are king at John Brewer's Tavern in Waltham. 20 cent wings are available from 6 p.m. on those nights, meaning that you can get as many wings as you can handle, plus a drink and blue cheese (the wings are hot, so you'll need it) for under $10. Watch out during football season, though, as it can get crowded pretty quickly for the big Sunday and Monday night games.

So, What are you in the mood for?

Welcome to Lasell, and Boston!

It looks like the countdown shows less than a month until first year students move-in to Lasell! But wait, classes don’t start for another four days after that, so what’s going on in the meantime?

Well, starting on the 3rd, there will be an array of trips, adventures and experiences for first year students to take part in. No matter what your interests, you’ll undoubtedly find activities or outings for you that are being offered during Lasell Laser Welcome Weekend program.

There’s a free tour of Boston’s North End and Fanueil Hall, but be sure you bring some money for lunch at one of the countless eateries in the North End. If you’re looking for a history lesson and shopping excursion in one, you’ll definitely want to think about the faculty-led tour of Boston Common (the nation’s oldest park) and Newbury Street, home to a wide variety of shopping destinations.

Baseball fans will be interested in the tour of Fenway Park ($5), offering first year students the chance to site on famed Green Monster, visit the press box, learn why the grandstand seats (you know, the wooden ones) are so uncomfortable and find out what Manny Ramirez was really doing when he would duck into the scoreboard.

If you’re interested in touring the city, but aren’t so interested in all that walking, check out the Boston Trolley tour or the Duck Tour, both of which take you around to the city’s must-see sights, but only one will give you a view from the (dirty) water.

Fashion majors can get an early intro to their careers with a trip to the American Textile History Museum ($5)in Lowell, MA. Students who take this trip will get a glimpse into what was once the epicenter of the New England textile industry as well as the use of textiles in cars, aero-space and other industries in the museum’s primary exhibit: ‘Textile Revolution: An Exploration Through Space and Time.’

That’s not the only museum available during welcome weekend. Students will also have the opportunity to attend the Museum of Fine Arts (free) or the Kennedy library ($5), home to a wide-ranging celebration of President John F. Kennedy’s life, legacy and presidency. Also available is a trip to Boston’s Museum of Science ($10), home to thrilling natural artifacts and the OmniMax theater, a fully enveloping motion-picture experience.

Those are just some of the trips and activities that first-year students will have the opportunity to be a part of. Registration for these trips will begin soon and advanced sign up is required. So, which trips do you think you’ll attend? Have you already done some of them? If so, what’d you think?

New Blogger, New Year!

Until now, Jordan Feeney was behind the Student Activities blog. Not much has changed in that regard, because my name is Jordan too. Like my predecessor, I work at the Lasell College Office of Student Activities, but I get to see the other side of, what happens during the summer when everything (supposedly) slows down. I’m going to be a senior this year, and have been a part of orientation in some capacity for the last four years, the first of those being as a Guppy in session two.

I’ve been working at the Office of Student Activities for three years now, and this is my third summer working behind the scenes of Laser Link Orientation and Transfer Transitions, and it’s been a great ride so far. OSA has provided myself, and the rest of the students at Lasell a tremendous way to get involved in a variety of ways, and I’ll fill you in on some of those throughout the summer and school year.

Before starting here at the end of my freshman year, I wasn’t too involved. Now, I’m the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, The 1851 Chronicle, a member of the Sports Management Club and Lasell College Radio. In fact, most first year students probably caught me spinning tunes (or spilling speakers) at the Laser Link BBQ.

Keep an eye out for more posts from me about getting involved, finding stuff to do and transitioning to Lasell for the rest of the summer and beyond.

Spring Break '11: No Sand, No Sun, No Problem!

Ahh, my last undergrad spring break. You'd think as a senior I would have had the ultimate vacation planned... definitely Cancun, LA, Florida or even Aruba. Unfortunately, no. I will be spending SB '11 in New Hampshire relaxing with family, friends and hopefully not doing homework.
I really can't complain, it will be nice to sleep in my old bed, fill up on home cooked meals and visit with high school friends, but I can't help but feel a bit unsatisfied. That's why I've brainstormed three ideas to get those of us "spring breaking" in chilly New England through one of our last vacations of the school year:

Be a tourist of your own town- I know when you were younger you felt like you had done and seen everything there is to do and see in your hometown... twice. That may be, but now that a couple years have passed it may be interesting to search out some brochures and really get to know where you grew up.

Host a party- This can be a great way of reconnecting with friends from home. Make it wallet-friendly and have everyone bring their favorite dish or appetizer. You can even take this opportunity to bring in friends from school. In my oppinion, food and friends always equal fun.

Volunteer- Lasell's Center for Community Based Learning (CCBL) offers an Alternative Spring Break for students to do something completely different and rewarding during their vacation. With the Alternative Break, you can provide needed services to communities around the country, while gaining a better understanding of important social issues: poverty, affordable housing, homelessness, etc. Not to mention this is a great way to boost your resume! This year students will be traveling to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Though your spring break may not include sand or sun, it can still be your best and most memorable vacation of the year.

For more information on CCBL's Alternative Spring Break, you can visit Potter Hall, Lower Level or email at ccbl@lasell.edu .

Did you know...

Lasell College Office of Student Activities is on Facebook and Twitter? Between solidifying class schedules, securing internships and jobs, and purchasing course materials, Lasell students have been working hard to begin their semester. Students aren't the only ones busy, however, the Office of Student Activities and other organizations around campus have been hard at work to provide students with activities that are worthy of clearing a busy schedule.

Ticket sales this month include Improv Asylum (January 19 @ 1pm, $10) and Campus Activities Board Tubing Tickets at Nashoba Valley (January 24 @ 10am, $10). If free trips appeal to you more, check out the Campus Activities Board Wrentham Outlets trip on January 29 at 12pm (you must sign up for this event).

More Campus Activities Board events this month include ventriloquist Michael Harrison (January 28 @ 8:30pm in Yamawaki Auditorium), comedians Dave & Ethan (January 28 @ 8pm in the Campus Center) and musician Jared Mahone (February 2 @ 8 in the Campus Center). CAB Movie Series will also be showing Due Date (January 27 @8, 28 @ 7 & 29 @ 7).

Seniors, specifically, have a lot of deadlines approaching as their last semester begins. Senior Week sign-ups have begun and deposits are due by February 11, 2011. Senior Week will begin after the last final exam on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 until Saturday, May 14, 2011.

The Senior Week package includes:
• Senior Bar Night in Boston
• King’s Night
• Class Dinner and Pub Night
• Faculty Staff BBQ
• Senior Cruise
• Alumni Brunch
• Senior Class Group Photo

As a senior, I recognize many dates are looming and there is a lot to keep track of, so take advantage of the Senior Check List provided at this link: http://www.lasell.edu/Campus-Life/Activities-and-Involvement/Commencement-/Graduation-Checklist.html

For any information related to campus events or senior week, please follow this link and feel free to contact the Office of Student Activities and/or the Senior Class Committee: http://www.lasell.edu/Campus-Life/Activities-and-Involvement/Commencement-/Senior-Events.html

On to the Next One- Published in the December issue of the 1851 Chronicle

This December I had my first column published in the 1851 Chronicle. Of course I am all smiles about this accomplishment and wanted to share it with readers via blog! Enjoy!

Until the first semester of my senior year, I was under the blissful impression that once you grow up you will know what you’re going to “be.” Now it’s November and I know better. Age has not defined me or pointed me in the right direction; neither have my grades or classes. Here I am, 11:30 p.m. on a Wednesday, in the middle of what I am so endearingly referring to as my quarter-life crisis.
I recently turned twenty-one and it was almost like a switch had been flipped. I was an adult. Suddenly my 2am courtesy curfew at home had been lifted, I got my horizontal license (I guess it’s only a big deal in New Hampshire), and I was able to go to all the same establishments my friends had frequented for the past few months without me. Along with the few, but fantastic up-sides, a fire was lit under me as the race to graduation began.
I am a Communications major with a focus in Journalism. My next goal is finding an internship. This subject has not failed to keep me up at night. To most I may seem reasonably put together, but inside I’m sure I more resemble a desperate, caged animal than a student.
I am clinging to the hope that I didn’t make a mistake declaring my focus in such a competitive field. To all the skeptics that may scoff at my last statement, yes, writing is competitive. There is always a colleague who grasps the English language better, or creates more interesting angles. All I can do is let what I’ve learned flow from my mind and pray something original, not to mention correctly punctuated, comes out.
There should be no reason to worry; I’ve done everything I was “supposed” to. To put it the way my father explained to me, “I have kept all of my doors open.” I have a solid 3.5 GPA and am involved in the Lasell community. I’ve done almost everything right, yet I still worry. I worry I won’t be successful, or at least not successful enough. I worry all of my hard work the past four years will somehow be wasted. I just plain worry. Hence the “crisis.”
My first internship attempt fell through, much thanks to inner company issues and the disbanding of their internship program. So as Jay-Z says, “on to the next one.” I’ve sent more cover letters and writing samples, edited and re-edited my resume, the last thing to do is the part I’m worst at: wait.
It would be most dramatic to make it seem like I was in this fight alone, but I’m not. I am supported by various professors, friends, and of course, my mom. Even in such good company, I wait for the light at the end of the Graduation Tunnel to grow from a seemingly hopeless pinhole to a Jordan-shaped opening where I will shine.
Crisis averted for one more night.

November Already?

Above: Musician Jer Coons. Below: Comedian Jeff Dye.

I'm sorry, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to believe that the month of November is almost over. As my senior year hits it's midpoint, I am running around campus like a crazy person trying to sign up for spring classes, fill out all necessary paperwork, and find an internship. These tasks have left me completely exhausted.
Thankfully, in my downtime, CAB and the Office of Student Activities have a slew of discounted ticket sales and on-campus performances to keep my work and play balanced.
This past weekend, Musician Jer Coons and Comedian Jeff Dye came to campus. Both entertainers have a strong following and made for a great turn-out. Dye has recently been featured on Comedy Central and you can listen to Coons' most recent single, "Legs," at http://www.myspace.com/jercoons.
Tickets are now on sale for a number of outings and shows. CAB is funding another trip to New York City for December 4th. Along with the purchase of an NYC Trip ticket, you may also purchase a ticket to see Cirque de Soleil for the same day. There is also a senior class trip to Mohegan Sun for December 3rd. This trip includes $10 gambling money, a buffet dinner, and transportation. Not to mention, enjoying the change of seasons on our beautiful campus.

Beginning October 15th, Mentalist Robert Channing will be on campus at 8 p.m. in de Witt Hall for students. When I first attended Channing's show I was left awe struck at his talent! He chose arandom person in the audience and guessed the exact change in their pocket! I would highly recommend seeing him and being part of the show.

That night there is also a showing of Toy Story 3 at 7 p.m. in Rosen for families, friends, alumni, and students. This event is brought to us by Campus Activities Board.

Things really speed up on the Saturday the 16th beginning with the Charles River Boat Cruise at 9 a.m. Tickets are required for this event, but it is absolutely worth it. If a boat cruise isn't necessarily your style, FFAW is offering a Boston Duck Tour at 11 a.m, which also requires ticket purchase. Both tours are a great way to socialize and learn about the city you're living in.

From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the Wass Patio is the Fall Fest and Campus Barbeque. The Barbeque is a great opportunity to introduce friends and family and spend a beautiful afternoon outside. Though the Barbeque runs until 2:30 p.m., Fall Fest is held until 3:30 p.m. During this time there will be Varsity games as well as Alumni Athletic games for your viewing, or participating, pleasure. The atmosphere is buzzing with socializing, great food, and music brought to you by Lasell College Radio.

That night Toy Story 3 will be showing again at 7 p.m. as well as CAB Bingo starting at 8 p.m. in de Witt Hall. These events are open to all students, friends, family, and alumni. This will be people’s one and only chance this year to bring family and guests and have them eligible to win. Prizes include a Blu-Ray Player, Black Nintendo Wii, a board game bundle, a Disney movie bundle, and more!

Wrapping up the weekend on Sunday the 17th is the River Day Boat Races. This event begins at 11 a.m. at the Stoller Boat House located down the street from the Lasell Campus. This is an exceptional event due to the fantastic location right on the Charles River. Atendants are able to form teams, sign up, and race in our old restored war canoes. The winning team also gets to bring home a River Day trophy! The boat races are another, as well as the last, opportunity that weekend to spend time enjoying the scenery and all of which our college has to offer.

For more information please visit our website www.lasell.edu/ffaw or contact the office of Student Activities at (617) 243-2475 or studentactivities@lasell.edu. You can find them performing at a number of different activities on campus. I had the opportunity to hear them at the opening men's volleyball game earlier this spring. They sang the National Anthem and their sound was tight and vibrant. As a former high school choral singer of four years, I was extremely impressed and proud that they were representing Lasell! They also showed diversity singing with multiple male vocalists.

The Office of Student Activities is always trying to find new and exciting groups and clubs to promote on campus. If you're interested in a specific topic or subject, chances are there are many other students that share the same passion! We encourage students to learn about how to create and implement new organizations to give them opportunities to bring what they love to our community.

Tonight, CAB is showcasing the Acapella Club in the Campus Center at 8pm. Admission is free, which I think is a steal to come and listen to their voices! For more information feel free to contact CAB at cab@lasell.edu.

Upcoming Sales at OSA

The Office of Student Activities is consistently trying to bring new trips and activities to Lasell students. This competition was brought to us by "Recyclemania."

"Recyclemania" is described as "a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities." Basically, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. With each week’s reports and rankings, participating schools watch how their results fluctuate against other schools and use this to rally their campus communities to reduce and recycle more.

Lasell has managed to do pretty well since the beginning of the competition. Out of the 607 schools registered, on February 2nd Lasell was ranked 132nd spot out of the 179 in the Competition Division. This achievement was noted on the Lasell Recyclemania Facebook Group Page as "Not bad, but not good." Unfortunately, on February 7 Lasell was recorded at 189. Though, there is time for improvement and with our colleges recent developments to become more "green," I am sure a comeback is instore.

To find out more information about Recyclemania feel free to visit http://www.recyclemania.org/ and for information regarding Recyclemania at Lasell, check out the Facebook group by searching Lasell College Recyclemania 2010.

Valentine's Day on Campus

Valentine's Day is this weekend and has created quite the hype around Lasell. The 1851 Chronicle came out yesterday with multiple Valentine's Day features and conversations can be heard all around campus about plans for this long weekend.
Many couples in college are stumped as to deciding which romantic activities to take part in. As college students, most of us are on a tight budget and unable to provide our significant others with the expensive, lavish gifts we would like to shower them with. So, the question is posed: What realistic options do college students have when deciding what to do for Valentine's Day?
After careful consideration I've answered this question with three options: Hospitality Club Candygrams, adventure into the city and the classic, dinner and a movie.
Candygrams, upon first observation, are most likely one of the first things someone may cross off their list due to the simplicity of the gift. Though, with a bit of creativity, a simple candygram could lead to a great surprise! Since candygrams can be sent anonymously, this could be a great way to show your crush you care. Or, a message stating a time and place could be a mysterious way to start off a date with your Valentine. The Hospitality Club will be outside Valentine Dining Hall February 4, 8, 9 and 10th selling their candygrams that will be put in your sweetheart's mailbox right here on campus.
Students may shy away from taking their Valentine into the city, fearing jacked-up prices and expensive transportation, but if done correctly a night in the city may not be out of reach. In stead of taking a taxi or driving into Boston and paying for parking, the T is an obvious solution. A great idea for an interactive date in the city could be The Aquarium. Taking the T to the Aquarium couldn't be easier- it has it's own stop off the Blue line. Also, The Aquarium offers discounted tickets for students costing around $20 with student ID's.
Finally, everyone's go-to date: dinner and a movie. This may sound boring to some, but on the Lasell campus there are a few different ways to make this old dating staple a new idea. This weekend, CAB is showing "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" in Rosen Auditorium at 7pm. There's no transportation necessary to enjoy this activity, but even better: it's free! As for dinner, the 155 Grill in the Campus Center has a variety of food with which you can purchase with you Laser Loot stored on you Torch Card. I'm positive you won't be able to find a more convenient alternative this Valentine's Day.
Planning a Valentine's Day to remember isn't as hard as you may think. There are so many options on or around campus, you just have to keep your eyes and ears open. For more information on activities happening around Lasell visit the MyLasell web page or follow CAB and the Office of Student Activities on Facebook!

Getting "in the swing" of Spring '10

my first weekend back at lasell college!

Coming back to Lasell after four months abroad and almost two months of winter vacation definitely had it's "ups"and "downs." I felt as though I had been thrown into three different lives within the matter of a year: Student and apartment owner abroad, family member and girlfriend, as well as Lasell junior with a heavy course load.
When I drove on to Campus for the first time since last May I remember thinking, "Shouldn't I be done with this? I've had so much life experience, I feel like I've already graduated." The truth is, I hadn't graduated and though that life experience will stay with me forever, it's time to snap out of it and come back to reality.
Beginning this semester I already knew I was in for a different experience because I had chosen to live in a single room in one of the residential houses on campus. I had never lived in a single before, but was anxious to see what it would feel like to have my own room. I also knew this semester would be different because I was taking 6 academic Communications courses as well as taking on the position of Editor of the Arts and Entertainment section of the 1851 Chronicle.
My first week back was easy. Reconnecting with friends I hadn't seen before I left the country was among some of my favorite parts about rejoining Lasell. After the first week of classes I started to feel the academic pressure rising- my assignment book was flooding with pen marks and the calender hanging in my room had not one open spot to write on. I had almost forgotten how busy college can be!
Getting back into the "swing" of things ended up to be an easier transition than I had thought. I fell in love with my homey residential house and the room that's all mine, my old friends had made new friends that are now a welcomed addition to my life, and the long nights of homework, early morning classes, meetings and going to work gave me a purpose back at school, so I never felt out of place. Today is my deadline for the first issue of the Chronicle and I was up a good amount of last night editing and writing, but I almost feel relieved to be back to normalcy... even if "normalcy" means writing and typing through the night!
Feeling like you may not belong or have a purpose in your college community sometimes stems from not trying to "put yourself out there." Finding a club, organization or job that you enjoy and that challenges you is a great way to find where you "fit." Often, it takes some time to find where that is, but there are so many options on campus that finding your place may be much easier than you think.

Study Abroad Fall '09

Many people have said it, though it couldn't be more true: college is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and educational times of your life. The growing experience starts when your family leaves you as a first year student in an unfamiliar residence hall that soon becomes your home- the rest of the journey is up to you. You may choose to join a club or organization, find a job on campus or even head your own program. Finding the specific path to your success and happiness during your college years may lead you in a number of directions- some may turn out to be dead ends, others have the power to change you in more ways than one.

If you had asked me as a first year student if I saw myself living in another country by the time I was twenty, my answer would have been an obvious "no." Though, here I am, a year and a half from graduation with four months of experience living and studying abroad in Florence, Italy.

Pushing yourself outside your comfort zone and becoming more acquainted with the person you would like to be is part of the "college experience." For me, studying abroad forced me to come out of a shell I wasn't even aware I was in: I was able to live on my own, gaining self confidence and independence, I had the opportunity to learn a new language as well as being able to travel easily around Europe. I even made friends within other cultures.

If the abroad experience is where you see your path taking you, or even if it falls into your lap, Lasell can help clear the way. Lasell College offers numerous programs to many diverse countries around the world. In my case, I spent no more than my yearly college tuition to study in Italy. My program also offered me a meal plan where I was able to eat at Italian pizzareias, cafes and ristorantes for almost nothing.

To learn more about studying abroad feel free to visit the Lasell College web site or to contact Lena Capiello, Coordinator of International Services at lcapiello@lasell.edu.

Cyber Diem Project

My friends/main characters in my Cyber Diem Project

From left to right: Ariel, Lawren, Carly, Samantha

As of today, I have 11 days until I return to my hometown in New Hampshire for the summer. Basically, everyone in my class (all five of us) were asked to create a 24 minute documentary, each minute roughly acting as an hour of a day. We have been watching documentaries from every time period this semester and have a good understanding of what goes into making one. This endeavor was easier said than done.

My documentary was about my four best friends at Lasell. After days and weeks in the library, it became a coming of age story about them, documenting their struggles and worries about their futures. The most beautiful part about my movie was that our friendship was portrayed so well. I'm very excited to be part of this project and think it's great for students across campus to come and watch what their fellow students have accomplished.

The Cyber Diem Projects will be showing tonight at 7pm in Rosen. At the beginning of this school year I knew I wanted to study abroad and Lasell made it so easy! There were various meetings and that helped me decide which program best fit me. I chose to travel through AIFS and they have been a huge help. Constant conversing through e-mail with my admissions officer has kept me up to date on everything I need to do and have done.
Two days ago I got my official acceptance letter and it was that moment when the excitement really sunk in. Studying abroad is such an amazing opportunity, one that I am so glad I am taking advantage of. I think it is extremely important for American students to travel and gain a better understanding of countries other than our own. I am taking one communications class, various elementary Italian language courses and a number of art and photography classes.
The cost to travel right now is absolutely horrendous, though through the Lasell College study abroad program traveling to another country and studying there is no more than your yearly tuition. Realizing that I am half way through my college career is scary, but also very exciting. My whole life I've been looking towords college and had only vague dreams of what comes after... but, here I am! Successful, and almost completely finished.
I don't have many regrets about how I have conducted myself thus far in college. Though, my biggest piece of advice, to any current or prospective student would be to become involved within your school as early as possible. Becoming involved with a group or activity on campus opens you up to so many new people, challenges and adventures. The only regret I could truly say I have about the past two years is that I didn't take that advice and only became involved my second year at school.
The Office of Student Activities is a great place to start if you are searching out a club to join. Clubs on campus range from environmental awareness, like Urth, tolerence, like S.A.F.E., or even the Campus Activity Board.
Entering college is terrifying and walking in to a meeting with a club you are unsure of is also, but in the end it really is worth it. Becoming involved on campus will give you an amazing sense of belonging. As part of a club you feel needed, you have something to do with your free time, and you can even sometimes make a difference.

Seasonal Activities

Women's lacrosse players (and Boomer!) honor their senior players on "senior day."

Photo borrowed from Ariel Walkmark's facebook.

Spring is in the air and seems to be treating everone on campus well. On a sunny afternoon it's not uncommon to see groups of people congregating on the turf, kicking soccer balls, playing some lacrosse or just sunning and chatting with friends.

Lacrosse, baseball, and softball have all gone into full swing in the past few weeks. All of the teams have been experiencing surprisingly good turn outs at games. With finals leaving us with two or three weeks left to tie up loose ends for projects and papers, the library has become quite the hot spot on campus. I, myself, have spent the majority of my free time there this week working on papers and even a Window's Movie Maker project for my documentary film class.

Besides the minor monsoon-like rains we have been experiencing the past week or so, it's obvious that the activities on campus have been making a smooth shift from winter to spring.

Off Campus Activities

This past year my friends and I have started taking advantage of activities off campus as well as on. As I mentioned in a past post, hiking is something we've grown to really enjoy and try to do regularly. As well as places you can reach by car, the T has been a big help in finding a remedy for a boring afternoon on campus.
Lately, a lot of great bands have been coming through The House of Blues Boston on 15 Lansdowne St. Over spring break I saw my favorite band, Bloc Party, play there and in late April Jack's Mannequin will be coming through as well. Bands and singers of all genres seem to stop in The House of Blues and most of the shows are all-ages. Getting there is extremely easy from the Woodland T stop near Lasell. Take Woodland to the Kenmore stop, walk up Brookline Ave. towords Fenway Park, take a left on to Lansdowne St and the House of Blues is right acroos from Fenway Park... How much easier could it get?
Another fun place directly off the T is Newbury Street. Take the green line to Hynes Convention Center and you're there! Great shops, boutiques and restaurants can be found here- even if you want to window shop this pricey walk will not dissappoint. At walking distance to the Prudential Center, their shopping mall and The Top of the Hub is also easily accessible.
Some more great places to visit would be The Museum of Fine Arts on the E train on the green line, or The Aquarium. The Aquarium has it's own stop on the blue line, but is also in walking distance from Government Center. Both of these places have discounts for college students and provide hours of entertainment.
Taking advantage of the T and other public transportation systems can save you a lot of cash and most definitely takes the stress out of parking in the city! So, if the college scene doesn't do it for you, you're lucky because, here at Lasell, Boston is your back yard.

"Boomer's" Reveal

Last night, the school mascot was revealed. A surprisingly large amount of students filtered into the Athletic Center. Small flashlights were given at the door representing, what we soon found out, was a laser.

At about 7:45pm, a casually dressed President Alexander was introduced. He dramatically read a speech reviewing Lasell College sports and pride, present and past. It was buzzing through the students how great it was to see him there, so enthralled in what was going on.

When the lights were turned down, small flashlight-lasers shot through the dark and howling students could be heard straight across campus. The tension was high and finally our mascot was revealed: Boomer the Torchbearer. A navy blue character who looks like he shot out of the sky... laser-like? How fitting.

So that was that, Boomer is Lasell College's first official mascot! As we all know, torches have played a large part in Lasell history since the beginning when they started being used at graduation ceremonies. A torchbearing mascot seems more than appropriate.

As I see it, the reveal was an overall success. The new mascot was very well recieved. It was a great opportunity for all students to come together, united in a fun and historical moment on campus.

Picture borrowed from the Boomer the Torchbearer Facebook Fan Club.

Spring Break on a Budget

For my Magazine and Feature Writing class last week we were asked to write two short features relating to Spring Break. Immediately my mind shot to how my spring break would be spent... on a budget.

Not everyone has the money to fly to Cabo and sip on fruity drinks this school year. Here are four tips on how to take advantage of your surroundings and save some cash this spring break.

1. Do something for your community. Volunteering is free and an immediate boost to any resume. Instead of sunning on beaches, conduct your own clean up! Everyone feels good after friends, beach, and indulging in something “green.”
2. Find something new in your old town. A state park, nature trail or museum could be hiding around any corner. Most local parks and museums don’t involve any fee and often can lead you to other interesting locations.
3. Host a BYO party- everyone gets involved! Another way to reconnect with high school friends, “bring-your-own” parties are creative and promise a good time. Everyone will be relieved to have a low-pressure, inexpensive evening.
4. Do something for yourself. For guys, this might mean spending some time at the gym or playing your favorite video game. Or for girls, getting a blow out at your local hair salon can cost as low as $20 and is a great way to get a little confidence boost.

No matter what you do, make sure your Spring Break is safe, fun and maybe even inexpensive!

Hiking at Noon Hill

A couple of weekends ago, my roommates and I realized we were all getting restless in our dorm rooms. A recent snow drew us outdoors and with a little research we found Noon Hill in Medfield, MA.

Just over a half hour drive from Lasell, Noon Hill looked as though we had stopped in the northern most part of Maine! It was a great bonding experience for my roommates and I. It's never easy living with three other people, but it is so important to keep those bonds strong- your rommates become your family-away-from-home and it's not uncommon to fight like siblings sometimes! Pushing and supporting each other to achieve a common goal was extremely rewarding for everyone involved.

Directions to Noon Hill could not be easier:
Start out going SOUTHEAST on COMMONWEALTH AVE/ MA-30 E toward CHESWICK RD.
Turn RIGHT onto WASHINGTON ST/ MA-16.
Merge onto I-95 S/ MA-128 S toward DEDHAM/ PROVIDENCE RI/ CAPE COD.
Merge onto MA-109 W via EXIT 16B toward WESTWOOD.
Turn LEFT onto MA-27/ SPRING ST. Hiking is just one option and was, in this case, free! If you don't have the luxury of a car on campus (or a roommate with a car!) the T and commuter rail open a world of options.

Want more information about Noon Hill? This historic event is recognized because Dr. Roberts became one of the first nine black students to go to a formerly segregated public high school in Little Rock and across the country.

His riveting speech touched on a number of topics, such as: how we continue to be confused by the construct of race, how our concept of community is still developing and how the lessons learned from "Little Rock" affects our decision making today.

A much sought after speaker, Dr. Roberts lectures on a variety of different subjects. My name is Jordan and I'm a sophomore here at Lasell. I am a Communications major with a focus in Journalism and work in the Office of Student Activities.
Coming in to work this morning I braced myself along with the other shuffling bodies making their way to class, work or breakfast. I've exchanged "hellos" with friends I passed on my way and "good mornings" to past and present professors. The beauty of Lasell, especially on a morning like this morning when walking is not preferable, is the smaller size of the campus. This means smaller classes and a more intimate student/teacher ratio. There are few people on campus I don't know or know of and even fewer that I've never seen before.
As I stated earlier, I live in Rockwell. It's one of the newer residence halls nestled behind the freshman dorms, McClelland and vanWinkle. Rockwell is primarily a sophomore dorm and is also occupied by a large amount of Lacrosse players. My roommate, Ariel plays lacrosse and so does one of my suitemates, Lawren... as well as the majority of boys on our floor. As a girl who has never been too interested in sports, living with people who have that passion has definitely been an eye opening experience. It's amazing the different types of people you meet living on campus in college.
I met Lawren last year in my old dorm, McClelland. Both of our roommates were rarely on campus and we found comfort in having someone else to spend our time with. Lawren introduced me to her friends and I did the same for her. Two of Lawren's friends, Ariel and Carly, were on the lacrosse team and by the end of the year they were looking for a fourth person to live with them next year in Rockwell. I was quick to accept the offer, and it is one of the best decisions I've made at Lasell! Living with three other girls is not always easy, but between the four of us we each add something unique to what has become an amazing friendship.
My job is also something I am thankful to have found myself with this year. My freshman year was difficult, as it is for many first years. I missed home, old friends and family and because of that I found myself not always putting myself out there to join clubs and involve myself in many activities on campus. Entering school this year I had a different outlook: I am exactly where I should be and I am going to enjoy it to the fullest. Being involved with the Office of Student Activities, I feel an even stronger connection with my campus. I know what is happening at Lasell and find myself further enjoying what this campus has to offer me. This year I joined a new club called Urth Club and was recently appointed secretary. Urth club focuses on our community, recycling, sustainable living and the benefits of "going green." I doubt I would have become affiliated with such a great group if I had not been more involved at school.
My job here is also fun- my bosses have taken the time and gotten to know all of the work studies in the office and isolated what they do best. At work I design and create bulletin boards hung around campus and write for this blog. Writing is a passion of mine and I am beyond excited to be able to do it now at work. Lasell is a great school in an awesome location filled with impressive students, faculty and staff. There is no doubt in my mind I will have a lot to write about this semester!
